Hydraulic jeans biography

Jean Michel Camille Malfroy, usually known as Camille, was born at Macornay, Lons-le-Saunier, Jura, France, on 23 March 1839. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Malfroy, a miller, and his wife, Josephine Pricarde. With his father and Jules Cézar, the eldest of his three brothers, Camille joined the rush to the Victorian goldfields in the 1850s. He appears to have arrived in New Zealand in the early 1860s. In 1866 he was admitted to the Ross Oddfellows' Lodge, of which he was trustee for 15 years. On 1 July 1874 Malfroy, then manager of the Totara and Jones's Creek Water Race Company, married Ellen Alice Jones at Ross. Although they had no children of their own, the couple unofficially adopted a daughter, May, born Mary Searle at Donoghues, Ross, on 14 March 1880. In adult life May reverted to her birth names.Naturalised on 7 May 1878, Malfroy was that year elected first mayor of Ross and appointed a justice of the peace. In 1876 he had unsuccessfully stood for the Totara riding of the Westland County Council; his challenge of the ballot count at the Donoghues polling booth failed to alter the result.During his years on the West Coast goldfields, Malfroy was associated with the Mont d'Or Gold Mining and Water Race Company and the Ross United Gold Mining Company, variously as mining manager, mechanical and hydraulic engineer and director. He gained a reputation for ingenuity in designing water races and mine pumping equipment; it is claimed that he installed at Ross the first large hydraulic pumping plant in New Zealand. Malfroy patented three of his inventions: a centrifugal minerals separator, a reversible turbine for winding purposes, and sluice ripples made from cut railway lines. In 1886 Malfroy's career took a new direction when he accepted appointment by the Crown Lands Department as engineer in charge of works connected with the Rotorua wharf and the town water supply. In addition, Malfroy was responsible for recording the changes in lake level and thermal activity which had occurred after the Tarawera eruption of that year. In addition, Malfroy was overseer of works associated with the Rotorua Sanatorium.Malfroy soon proved his engineering and organisational skills, and he was appointed to mount and take charge of New Zealand's exhibits at the 1889 Exposition coloniale in Paris. Here he served both as exhibition juror and exhibitor, winning a silver medal for his entry of Maori clothing. On 30 October 1889 he was made a chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. After the exhibition Malfroy visited English and European spa facilities with a view to improving those in New Zealand.Malfroy returned to Rotorua and in 1891 became chairman of the Rotorua Town Board. He had been first elected to the position in 1888, but stood down during 1889–90. He held the position from 1891 until his death, except for a break in 1893 when he was sent to report on the thermal potential at Hanmer and South Westland, and another period of leave in September 1895. As a local politician Malfroy was diplomatic in his dealings with Maori. He facilitated the purchase of Hinemihi meeting house for the retiring governor, Lord Onslow, in 1892, and gained permission for the removal of Maori graves impeding road realignment at Ohinemutu. In his capacity as an engineer, however, his relationship with Maori may have been less successful. At Whakarewarewa there was interference with departmentally authorised works around Pohutu geyser, which Malfroy had manipulated into playing regularly. However, his experiments in accelerating silica deposition to form artificially extended terraces around Waikite geyser were not obstructed.

Cinch jeans biography

"I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - all I hope for in my clothes."-Yves Saint Laurent, Fashion Designer
Blue jeans started out as humble work pants invented by a pair of immigrants in the Old West.
Jacob Davis, a Latvian-born tailor making pants for miners in Reno, Nevada, struck on a clever way to keep on-seam pocket corners from tearing: he secured them with the copper rivets he used to reinforce seams on tents and horse blankets.Davis’s pants struck gold with miners, so he decided to patent the idea. The problem was that he didn’t have the $68 filing fee, let alone the resources to produce pants in large quantities. He approached his supplier of cloth in San Francisco, California, with a partnership proposition. Levi Strauss, a German immigrant and purveyor of assorted goods to the mining camps, recognized the potential in the idea, and Davis and Strauss filed jointly in the fall of 1872. Their patent, described in the application as an “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings,” was granted the following May.
The pants produced by Levi Strauss & Co.—Davis ran the factory that made the pants—were made of denim, a rugged diagonal twill fabric woven with undyed and indigo-dyed cotton thread. Beyond that, the original design hardly resembles the modern jean. These waist overalls were boxy and relied on a back cinch to tighten the pants around the waist. The pants were held up by suspenders that buttoned on the waist. (Belt loops would be added some 50 years later.) The waist overalls, as the pants would be called until the late 1950s, featured two deep front pockets, a small watch pocket and one pocket on the back.Riveted waist overalls made from denim became standard work wear for blue collar workers across America by the turn of the 20th century. Cowboys were among those workers, and Levi Strauss & Co. courted the ranching and farming market vigorously. By 1905, the company was producing catalogs proclaiming, “All Over the West They Wear Levi Strauss & Co.’s Copper Riveted Overall.”Cowboys were prominently displayed in Levi Strauss advertisements for the next 30 years, yet the first “cowboy” pants were not marketed until 1924 by H.D. Lee Mercantile Co. based in Salina, Kansas. The Lee pants featured a wider opening at the bottom of the leg to better fit over cowboy boots. (Lee was also the first company to offer a zipper fly, rather than the traditional button fly.) These pants were later beefed up by three ounces and were marketed to rodeo contestants as Lee Riders. In 1949 Lee introduced a line of denim pants for women, called Lady Lee Riders. Lee Westerners were introduced a decade later to expand the influence of Western styling to a more mainstream consumer. At the end of WWII, rodeos, cowboy movies and dude ranches were important cultural touchstones for Americans, and Western wear as a fashion category was born. In 1948, Blue Bell, a denim work apparel company in Greensboro, North Carolina, hired a Philadelphia tailor named Bernard Lichtenstein to design a new pant for cowboys. Lichtenstein, a Polish immigrant, was known as Rodeo Ben because he designed arena apparel for rodeo cowboys who came to town to perform. The pants he developed for Blue Bell featured high back pockets and a proportional cut with wide, extra long legs that stacked on the foot of the boot and didn’t ride up the leg while the cowboy was in the saddle.

Buffalo jeans biography

Gloria Jean Schoonover was born on April 14, 1926 in Buffalo, New York. Her family moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania shortly after that; this is where Gloria spent the early part of her childhood. Her father owned a music store, while her mother, who had been a bareback rider in a circus, took care of Gloria and her three siblings.Gloria's singing ability was discovered at a young age, and by age five she was singing in the Scranton area. At age twelve, Gloria was taken to an audition by Universal director Joe Pasternak, who was looking for a new child singer to replace studio icon Deanna Durbin, who was being steered into adult and ingénue roles. Although hundreds of Shirley-Temple-perfect girls competed, the natural-looking Gloria was chosen, and she and her mother were soon on their way to Hollywood. In 1939, Gloria made her first film: "The Under-Pup", which made her an instant hit with moviegoers. Happy with their young coloratura soprano, Universal cast her in "If I Had My Way", which co-starred Bing Crosby. Following that was what many consider Gloria's best movie: "A Little Bit of Heaven". Following this was a co-starring role with W.C. Fields in "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break", which is the most seen of her movies today. At this point in 1941, Gloria was at the pinnacle of her career, and one would imagine that her star would soar. Unfortunately, it didn't work that way. Gloria had outgrown her Little Miss Fixit roles (as had Durbin a few years earlier), but Durbin was in command of the older-girl roles for the better pictures. At a loss for what to do with Jean, Universal moved her to the "Hepcat" movies, which appealed to the teenagers of that day. "What's Cooking", "Get Hep to Love", "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", and "It Comes Up Love," were all shot in 1942. "Mr. Big," and "Moonlight in Vermont" followed in 1943. All of the above were stock B films which appealed to teenagers of the time. Gloria (as did many Universal stars) had a few seconds on-screen in the war-effort picture, "Follow the Boys", in 1944. After that came a rather good picture "Follow My Rhythm" with Mel Torme, who became a close friend. Then, in "Ghost Catchers", she was teamed with popular comedians Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson. The rather forgettable "Reckless Age" was next, its main distinction being that it was the first movie in which Gloria played a more mature role.Gloria was to star in one of four episodes of the Julien Duvivier's "Flesh and Fantasy," alongside such stars as Edward G. Robinson, Charles Boyer, and Barbara Stanwyck. But the movie was deemed to be too long, and Gloria's segment was cut out. Some awful footage was added, and the end result was "Destiny". Gloria's performance was given rave reviews, but the movie itself met with modest success. Following this, Gloria did three more films at Universal: "I'll Remember April", "River Gang", and "Easy to Look at".At this point, upon the (bad) advice of her agent, Gloria decided not to renew her contract at Universal, opting instead to go on tour. The tour did not work out as well as expected, and Gloria returned to the Hollywood in 1947, but she found virtually nobody interested in her services. Groucho Marx gave her a minor role in his picture "Copacabana". This appearance ultimately landed her four more roles in: "I Surrender, Dear", "Manhattan Angel", "An Old Fashioned Girl" and "There's a Girl in My Heart".As the 1950's began, television was taking off in popularity. Gloria made several singing shorts that were aired during television's early days. Other than that and a few guest appearances on TV series, Gloria's acting career was virtually finished.
